Paul Nicksich successfully completed the national examination in order to become a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). The SAP is not a certification, but rather a qualification administered by the US Department of Transportation (DOT). Substance Abuse Professionals evaluate, refer for treatment and follow-up those employees in safety sensitive jobs who violate the alcohol and drug policies of the DOT and their respective employers. Those employees who are regarded as working in safety sensitive jobs are anyone with a CDL, people employed in civil aviation, pipeline companies, railroad employees and employees at nuclear power plants. The DOT also regulates other employees with safety sensitive jobs. As far as the DOT is concerned, the traveling public is the client. The purpose of the DOT Evaluations is to protect the public and to get the employee help for his or her substance abuse problem.
